An angry mob severely beat a teenager following an allegation of rape in the capital’s Khilkhet area while police were taking him into their custody Tuesday night.

A video footage that went viral on social media platforms on Tuesday night shows several hundred people surrounding a police vehicle and beating the youth hanging upside down.

Khilkhet police station officer-in-charge Kamal Hossain said that two separate cases — one involving rape charges and the other over the attack on police — in connection of the incident were filed on Wednesday.

‘The suspect was shown arrested in the rape case while police arrested two persons over the attack on police from the spot,’ he said.

The mob attacked a police vehicle while they attempted to take the youth into their custody, injuring seven police personnel, he said.

‘The mob surrounded the suspect Tuesday evening. On information, police went to the spot and took the suspect under police custody,’ he said.

At that time, the mob snatched the suspect and attacked police, he said, adding that the suspect was seriously injured and seven police officials were also injured in the attack.

Kamal said that both the victim child and the injured suspect were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Coordinator of the One Stop Crisis Centre at DMCH Sabina Yasmin said that it was initially believed to be a rape case, but it would be confirmed after a full examination of the victim.

She said that the condition of the victim was stable.

Meanwhile, three more incidents of rape and attempt to rape have come to light since Tuesday in Dhaka, Patuakhali and Jashore with the victims aged between seven and 18 years amid a rise in violence against children and women across the country in recent weeks.

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a neighbour named Nazim Khan while she was playing in the courtyard in Dhaka’s Nawabganj upazila on Tuesday evening, said Mominul Islam, officer-in-charge of the Nawabganj police station.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Patuakhali reported that a daughter of July-uprising martyr Jasim Halder, was allegedly raped on her way to her maternal grandparents’ house after visiting her father’s grave in the district’s Dumki upazila on Tuesday.

The victim, a 12th-grader, filed a case on Wednesday afternoon accusing Sakib Munshi, 19, son of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader late Mamun Munshi, and Sakib’s associate Sifat Munshi, 20.

A Barguna court granted remand to three accused arrested in a murder case over killing Montu Chandra Das, father of a rape victim.

The remanded accused are Aslam alias Kalu, 35, Rafiqul Islam, 42, and Shri Ram Chandra Roy, 67, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported.
