Justice AKM Asaduzzaman, the senior-most High Court judge, and Justice Farah Mahbub, the fourth in seniority among High Court judges, have been elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointments under Article 95(1) of the constitution, according to a gazette notification issued by law secretary Sheikh Abu Taher on Monday.


With the new appointments, the number of the Appellate Division judges is now seven.

Justice Farah Mahbub becomes the country’s fifth woman judge to serve in the Appellate Division.

Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that these were the first appointments made under the newly formed seven-member Supreme Judicial Appointment Council, established on February 18 following the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Ordinance 2025.

The Supreme Court, in a press release on Monday, said that chief justice Syed Rafaat Ahmed would administer the oath of office to the newly appointed judges at 10:30am at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge.
