A Bangladeshi man was beaten by several Indian nationals in the Dulali area along the Lohakuchi border under Goral union in Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat over a fishing dispute on Saturday.
The victim, Madhav Chandra, 40, was admitted to a local hospital.
Local people alleged that Indian nationals frequently stole fish from their traps laid in the Malda River.
When Madhav protested at the theft on Saturday morning, a group of Indian citizens attacked him, leaving him injured.
On information, Madab’s family members and local residents rescued him and took him to the hospital.
As tensions escalated over the issue, the Border Guard Bangladesh intervened and brought the situation under control.
Commanding officer of the 15th BGB battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi, said, ‘There was a tension between Bangladeshi youth Madhav Chandra and Indian citizens over fishing in the Malda River on the Lohakuchi border.’
After receiving the news, BGB members went to the spot and calmed the locals, he said.
‘A protest was lodged with the BSF through a flag meeting,’ Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi said, adding that injured Madhav Chandra has been admitted to the hospital.
‘The situation on the border is currently normal,’ he said.
