The Arakan Army, a rebel group in conflict-hit Myanmar, on Tuesday detained 11 Bangladeshi fishermen aboard two trawlers from the deep sea in the neighboring country’s territory, located opposite to Saint Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar district.

The group also took away three more fishing trawlers on the day but the number of the fishermen on those trawlers could not be known, said Teknaf upazila nirbahi officer Sk Ahsan Uddin.


The UNO said that the Arakan Army took away five  Bangladeshi fishing trawlers and detained all the fishermen aboard the trawlers.

He said that they came to know that a total of 11 fishermen had been working on two of the five trawlers.

‘We are trying to know the number of fishermen working on the remaining three trawlers,’ he said.

He said that three of the trawlers were from Teknaf and two were from Shah Porir Dwip.

Border Guard Bangladesh officials said that the Bangladeshi fishermen aboard five trawlers entered Myanmar’s territory while they had been catching fish in the deep sea.

The BGB 2 battalion commanding officer in Teknaf, Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashikur Rahman, said that they also could not confirm the number of the detained Bangladeshi fishermen aboard three trawlers.
