Two youths died allegedly from consuming toxic liquor at Charghat upazila in Rajshahi on Tuesday.

The deceased are Masud Rana, 35, and Nadim Islam, 28, residents of Nimpara village under the upazila, while another person, Mohammad Toni, was admitted to Charghat Upazila Health Complex after he fell sick.

Mohammad Toni said that he along with Masud and Nadim went to drink alcohol at the house of a man named Mamun in the Jhikra area at around 7:30pm on Sunday.

‘After drinking a little, I started feeling unwell and stopped, but Masud and Nadim consumed a large quantity of alcohol,’ he said.

Toni also said that Nadim died on his way to the hospital at around 5:00am early Tuesday while Masud died at around 7:00am while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Masud’s wife Sabina Khatun said that her husband came home at around 8:00pm on Sunday night and she was not sure whether he drank alcohol or not.

‘That night, he only ate two biscuits and nothing else. He slept the entire day on Monday,’ she said, adding that in the evening, he started having stomach pain.

‘Thinking it to be a gastric problem, we took him to the hospital at around 2:00am, and he died in the morning,’ she lamented.

Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Charghat Model Police Station, said that two youths from the Nimpara village died allegedly from consuming toxic liquor. ‘Police were sent to the houses of the deceased and necessary legal actions will be taken in this regard,’ he added.
