Two people were killed in a mob beating in the Sylheti Bazar area of Kamrangirchar in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.
Confirming the matter, Kamrangirchar police station officer-in-charge Amirul Islam said that the incident occurred at about 10:30pm on the day in the Sylheti Bazar area.
The deceased were members of an organised gang involved in robbery and extortion, he said.
The deceased were identified as Md Nadim, 30, and Masud, 32.
Police said that Masud and his associates demanded Tk 1 lakh in extortion from Nur Mohammad, a vendor in the Sylheti Bazar area.
‘Nur Mohammad denied paying the extortion. Later, a case was filed against the miscreants, and police arrested seven people in connection with the incident,’ OC Amirul said, adding that two deceased were the accused in the case.
In apparent retaliation, other members of the gang attacked Nur Mohammad again Wednesday evening to pressurise the complainant into withdrawing the case, he said.
‘They also assaulted the complainant. At that point, local people chased and caught the miscreants, and beat them up. Masud died on the spot while Nadim succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital,’ added the police official.
Nur Mohammad was receiving treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, said Amirul.
