Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan resigned on Wednesday and was replaced by former national team captain Faruque Ahmed in a meeting of the Board of Directors at the secretariat.
Confirming the news, BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Faruque was first elected as a director in the vacant position of Jalal Yunus before he was elected as the new president.
‘Faruque took over the charge immediately,’ he said.
The National Sports Council withdrew its nominee, Ahmed Sazzadul Alam, who was replaced by Nazmul Abedin Fahim.
Nazmul, who was also the sports minister in the cabinet of recently ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was appointed as the BCB president in 2012.
He was elected as the BCB president for three consecutive terms, with his latest term scheduled to end in October 2025.
The new president, Faruque, briefly captained Bangladesh in the 1994 ICC Trophy in Kenya.
He played seven ODIs between 1988 and 1999 and led Bangladesh in the ICC Trophy in 1994.
He played seven one-day internationals for the country, scoring 105 runs at 15.00 before retiring from the national cricket team after the 1999 World Cup.
After his playing days, Faruque served two terms as chief selector.
He was in charge from 2003 to 2007. He was credited for ushering in a new era in Bangladesh cricket, giving breaks to Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, among other young players.
He returned as chief selector in 2013 but resigned in 2016 when Nazmul decided to expand the selection panel to include coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmud in the selection panel.
