The vice-chancellors of Dhaka University and the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet resigned on Saturday following students’ demand.

On the day, provosts of seven residential halls and one warden of Dhaka University, three senior officials of Shahjalal University, and nine senior officials, including proctor, of Noakhali Science and Technology University also resigned from their posts.


With these resignations, a total of nine public universities’ vice-chancellors stepped down after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid mass uprising led by students.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Dhaka University reported that its vice-chancellor professor ASM Maksud Kamal resigned on Saturday following students’ demand.

The students alleged that the vice-chancellor did nothing when the university students came under attack during the protests.

Confirming the news university deputy registrar and the vice-chancellor’s personal secretary Md Arafat Hossain said that he had submitted the resignation letter to president Mohammed Shahabuddin through the education ministry.

Professor Maksud Kamal was appointed as the 29th vice-chancellor on November 4, 2023. He was the convener of the pro-Awami League teacher’s organisation at the university’s blue panel.

Earlier, on August 8, 13 out of a 14-member proctorial body of Dhaka University resigned.

Shahjalal University vice-chancellor professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, university’s Health Service Centre administrator professor Asif Iqbal, transport administrator professor Mohammed Anwar Hossain and another official Md Saiful Islam also resigned on Saturday, said university acting registrar Md Fazlur Rahman.

The registrar said that the university’s public relations office had confirmed the news as the vice-chancellor had submitted the resignation letter to president on the day.

The resignations came following the demand of the Student Movement Against Discrimination since August 7.

The students also declared him unwanted on the campus on August 8. 

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Noakhali reported that following a 48-hour ultimatum given by the students on August 7, Noakhali Science and Technology University proctor professor Anisuzzaman, provosts of five halls and three other senior official resigned.

University registrar Md Jasim Uddin confirmed receiving of the resignation letters. 

The students also demanded resignation of the university vice-chancellor professor Md Didar-ul-Alam.

Till Saturday, the vice-chancellors of Dhaka University and the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in Dinajpur, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Dhaka, Islamic University in Kushtia, and Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail resigned from their posts.

At least 82 senior officials of these nine universities along with Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University also resigned so far.
