In the face of student protest, the government on Tuesday cancelled the postponed Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations.

The process of preparing the results of the half-done examinations would be decided later, said the education ministry officials.

The students were protesting at different places in the country for the past few days to press their demand for the cancellation of the remaining exams.

The postponed HSC and equivalent exams were scheduled to be resumed on September 11 which were originally scheduled to be held between June 30 and August 21.

Earlier on Monday a section of the candidates of the examinations staged demonstration in the Dhaka education board area demanding cancellation of the remaining exams and results based on the already held exams.

Later, the authorities assured them saying that their demands would be considered.

At a meeting held at the ministry on Tuesday morning, decisions were taken to defer the postponed exams by two more weeks and reduce the number of questions to half.

Rejecting the decisions, the students stormed into the secretariat around 2:00pm on Monday through different gates.

Under the banner of ‘All students of HSC 2024 - Dhaka’, several hundred students gathered in front of the Bhaban 6 where the education ministry’s office is situated.

They chanted slogans to acknowledge their demands for cancelation of the remaining exams and publish results in an alternative way.

They also said that the exams were deferred already by around two months while further delay would jeopardise their academic life.

During protest they also locked the gates of the secretariat barring the vehicles inside from going outside.

Some officials and employees were seen leaving the secretariat through a pocket gate.

Around 4:00pm, many students went to the offices of the education ministry at 18th floor and took position in front of the Secondary and Higher Education Division offices.

At one stage, decision of cancelling the remaining exams was taken.

Confirming the news, the Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee chair professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar also said that the process of preparing the results of the examinations would be decided later.

The previously held exams would not be cancelled, he added.

Earlier, following the mass uprising of the students, the authorities had previously suspended the HSC and equivalent exams at different times from July 18 to August 10.

The exams then were rescheduled to be held between August 11 and September 18.

Later on August 7 the government again postponed the exams for unavoidable reasons.

Following a proposal, the chief adviser Muhammad Yunus on August 15 gave his approval for resuming the HSC and equivalent exams from September 11.
