Students and teachers on Tuesday at a discussion said effective academic practice, space for dissent and democracy with functioning students’ union could create a flourishing environment at universities in the country.

They also urged the authorities of different universities to nurture the spirit of the recent student-led uprising by ensuring the safety of students on campuses, allocating seats at residential halls to legitimate students and ending the practice of discriminating against students due to their political beliefs.


The discussion titled ‘Student-Teacher Dialogue: Kemon Bishwabidyalay Chai’ was organised by Mangalbarer Gopposoppo at RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium of Dhaka University.

The DU Bangla department professor Mohammad Azam, Jahangirnagar University associate professor of philosophy department Syed Nizar, student of biochemistry and molecular biology department of DU Umama Fatema and student of DU international relations department Sadman Mujtaba Rafid spoke at the event.

‘We have to remove the “culture of tagging” from universities,’ said Sadman Mujtaba Rafid.

He also demanded proper functioning of medical centres at universities, adequate open space for fostering free thinking on campuses and steps for translating new books on different subjects.

‘We demand for the holding of elections of students’ unions annually,’ said Umama Fatema.

Students could practice in club-based activities, said Syed Nizar, adding, ‘Student politics was used by political parties to suppress ordinary students.’

Mohammad Azam said people in the country evaluated universities based on their locations.

‘Ranks of universities should be measured based on academic activities,’ said Azam.

Besides, the audience shared their views at the event.
