Students and teachers on Tuesday at a discussion said effective academic practice, space for dissent and democracy with functioning students鈥� union could create a flourishing environment at universities in the country.
They also urged the authorities of different universities to nurture the spirit of the recent student-led uprising by ensuring the safety of students on campuses, allocating seats at residential halls to legitimate students and ending the practice of discriminating against students due to their political beliefs.
The discussion titled 鈥楽tudent-Teacher Dialogue: Kemon Bishwabidyalay Chai鈥� was organised by Mangalbarer Gopposoppo at RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium of Dhaka University.
The DU Bangla department professor Mohammad Azam, Jahangirnagar University associate professor of philosophy department Syed Nizar, student of biochemistry and molecular biology department of DU Umama Fatema and student of DU international relations department Sadman Mujtaba Rafid spoke at the event.
鈥榃e have to remove the 鈥渃ulture of tagging鈥� from universities,鈥� said Sadman Mujtaba Rafid.
He also demanded proper functioning of medical centres at universities, adequate open space for fostering free thinking on campuses and steps for translating new books on different subjects.
鈥榃e demand for the holding of elections of students鈥� unions annually,鈥� said Umama Fatema.
Students could practice in club-based activities, said Syed Nizar, adding, 鈥楽tudent politics was used by political parties to suppress ordinary students.鈥�
Mohammad Azam said people in the country evaluated universities based on their locations.
鈥楻anks of universities should be measured based on academic activities,鈥� said Azam.
Besides, the audience shared their views at the event.
