The month-long upazila parishad elections ended on Wednesday with the fourth and final phase, when voting was held in 60 upazilas of 26 districts.

The voter turnout in this phase was even lower than in other phases, said the Election Commission.

Chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, in a post-poll press conference at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka, said that 34.33 per cent of votes were cast in this phase.

He, however, claimed that the election ended spontaneously without any major untoward incident.

‘I am satisfied, as the elections in 60 upazilas were peaceful,’ he said.

In the fourth phase, one chairman, three vice-chairmen, and one woman vice-chairman were elected unopposed.

The CEC said that 28 people had been arrested for various irregularities during the voting.

Besides, polling was suspended at one centre in Brahmanbaria due to allegations of irregularities, and five people were injured in the violence.

Elections in 20 upazilas, where voting was postponed due to Cyclone Remal, will be held on June 9.

A total of 721 candidates, including 251 for the chairman post, 265 for the vice chairman post, and 205 for the reserved vice chairman post, contested the polls.

The first phase was held on May 8, with voting in 139 upazilas. The turnout was 36 per cent. The second phase was held on May 21 in 156 upazilas with a 38 per cent turnout.

The turnout was again 36 per cent in the third phase of elections in 90 upazilas on May 29.
