The Bangabandhu National Stadium has officially been renamed as the National Stadium, Dhaka, according to a media release by the National Sports Council on Saturday.
Built in 1954, the stadium has been known by various names over the years, including Dhaka Stadium and Dhaka National Stadium. In 1996, it was officially renamed Bangabandhu National Stadium.
During the 1980s and 1990s, both football and cricket matches were held at the venue. Later, football was moved to Mirpur while cricket remained in Paltan.
Since 2005, Mirpur has been the permanent home of cricket, with football continuing at this stadium. Given its primary use by the football and athletics federations, the National Sports Council included the Bangladesh Football Federation president in the notification regarding the name change.
Situated in Paltan long before independence, the stadium even hosted Test matches for the Pakistan cricket team during the pre-1971 era.
Following Bangladesh's independence, it became the focal point of the country's sporting activities.
