Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that 140 crore Indian were worried about the safety of the Hindus in Bangladesh during the political unrest in the country, following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister.

‘140 crore Indian are worried about the safety of the Hindus, the minorities in Bangladesh,’ Indian news media NDTV reported, quoting Narendra Modi while he was delivering the 11th consecutive Independence Day speech at Delhi’s Red Fort.

Modi said that India would always be a well-wisher of Bangladesh’s progress, mentioning, ‘We hope the situation normalises in Bangladesh soon. Indians want the security of Hindus, and minorities there to be ensured.’

On August 5, Sheikh Hasina, aged 76, fled Bangladesh by helicopter to India amid a mass uprising led by student protesters, bringing an end to her 15-year long regime.   Since then, she has been staying in India.

Her 15-year rule, marked by allegations of human rights abuses, came to a dramatic end. The weeks leading up to her ousting were bloody, with more than 450 dying during the unrest and several reports of attacks on Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community, according to the NDTV report available online.
