Interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus in a telephonic conversation assured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of protecting Bangladesh鈥檚 minorities.

A media statement issued by the chief adviser鈥檚 press wing said that Yunus assured Modi of his commitment to safeguarding every citizen of the country when Modi raised the issue of the protection of the minorities.


Yunus said that the reports of attacks on the minorities have been exaggerated and he invited Indian journalists to visit Bangladesh and report from the ground on the issues of the minority protection.

Yunus told Modi that the situation in Bangladesh has been brought under control and that life was getting back to normal across the country.

The chief adviser also told Modi that his interim government took over as a result of the student movement which brought the second revolution of Bangladesh, and that his government would fulfill the desire of the democratic aspirations of the students and people.

He said that his government was committed to making all state apparatus fully functional and effective and ensuring human rights for every citizen.

The Indian prime minister felicitated Professor Muhammad Yunus on his assumption of the leadership of the interim government, said the media statement.

The Indian prime minister expressed his good wishes to the new government and expressed willingness to work with Bangladesh for the benefit of people as close friends.

Prime minister Narendra Modi invited chief adviser Yunus to join the Third Voice of Global South Summit to be hosted virtually by New Delhi on August 17. Yunus agreed to join the summit virtually from Dhaka.

India鈥檚 Press Information Bureau said that during the call, the Indian prime minister reaffirmed India鈥檚 support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He minister emphasised India鈥檚 commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives. The prime minister also underlined the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities in Bangladesh.

The bureau said that Modi received the call from Yunus.
