
Chinese ambassador in Dhaka Yao Wen on Monday said that Beijing was willing to continue providing assistance according to Bangladesh’s needs to help in disaster relief and reconstruction efforts.
‘We believe that under the leadership of the interim government, the people of Bangladesh will surely overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes soon,’ he said.
The envoy made the remark during his meeting with chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society professor MU Kabir Chowdhury at the latter’s headquarters in Dhaka and donated $1,00,000 on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China to assist flood victims in Bangladesh.
During the donation ceremony, ambassador Yao observed that Bangladesh had been suffering from a devastating flood, resulting in enormous loss of life and property.
The Chinese government and people were deeply concerned and empathise with the people of Bangladesh, he said.
As a country that also frequently suffers from natural disasters, the envoy said that China extended its sincere sympathies to the interim government and the people of Bangladesh.
‘Though disasters are ruthless, people are compassionate. In the face of the floods, the Red Cross Society of China promptly provided humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh,’ said the envoy.
He said that his country was keen to further consolidate and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Bangladesh.
On Sunday, ambassador Yao, during his meeting with chief advisor professor Muhammad Yunus donated $20,000 to the ‘chief advisor’s relief and welfare fund’ to support Bangladesh’s flood relief efforts.
The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh donated food, drinking water, and other relief supplies worth Tk 60,00,000 to the severely affected city of Feni to help the local victims through this difficult time, according to a press release issued by the Chinese embassy.
Chinese enterprises in Bangladesh continue to actively donate money and supplies, fulfilling their social responsibilities.
As of August 25, Chinese enterprises in Bangladesh have donated over Tk 4.13 million to the flood-affected areas and provided supplies worth about Tk 6.19 million, totalling approximately Tk 10.32 million.
Donations and contributions were still ongoing, said the Chinese embassy.
