Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will leave Dhaka today morning for Bangkok to join the sixth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation Summit.

A meeting is likely to be held between Yunus and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi tomorrow on the sidelines of BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

Khalilur Rahman, the chief adviser’s high representative on Rohingya and other priorities, came up with the information at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday ahead of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok of Thailand.

He said that in a flight of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the chief adviser and his entourage would depart the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 9:00am today.

Noting that Bangladesh had earlier requested a meeting between Yunus and Modi, Khalilur said that there were enough possibilities for holding the meeting.

Replying to a question, he said that Bangladesh was going to be the next chairman of BIMSTEC.

Therefore, the heads of the member states would take the chance to meet the chief adviser and discuss the future course of BIMSTEC, he said.

‘So, we can expect that there would also be a meeting with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi,’ Khalilur said.

He further said that the chief adviser would also hold bilateral talks with the leaders of BIMSTEC member states, and he would also be present in two memorandum of understanding signing ceremonies during the summit.

On April 4, the BIMSTEC chairmanship will officially be handed over to Yunus, he added.

Officials concerned in Dhaka said on Wednesday that they had received confirmation about the talks between Yunus and Modi in Bangkok.

This would be their first in-person meeting since the formation of the interim government led by Yunus on August 8, 2024.

Dhaka had earlier requested New Delhi to hold the bilateral meeting between Yunus and Modi as they were set to join the 6th BIMSTEC Summit on April 4 in Bangkok.

The relations between the two neighbours have strained following the fall of authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India for shelter amid the student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024.

Dhaka later sought her extradition for trial, but is yet to receive any response from New Delhi.
