Keya Group has announced the permanent closure of four of its factories in Gazipur, effective May 1, citing market instability, discrepancies in bank accounts, shortages of raw materials, and inadequate production capacity.

The announcement was made by issuing a notice on December 31 signed by the a senior official of the Keya Cosmetics Ltd (neat composition division).聽

The affected factories include Keya Cosmetics Limited鈥檚 Knit Composite Garments Division, Knitting Division, Spinning Division, and Cotton Division, as well as Keya Yarn Mills Ltd, according to the notice issued.

The notice said that all dues of workers, officials, and employees will be settled within 30 working days of the closure in accordance with the Bangladesh Labour Act.

Sabina Yasmin, manager of Keya Group鈥檚 human resources department said that all outstanding dues of workers will be settled in phases, in compliance with labour laws.

Contacted by calls and texts, MD of the business group Abdul Khaleque Pathan could not be reached for comment.

On December 29, several thousand workers of Keya Group factories protested and kept off from working, demanding their overdue November salaries and raising a 10-point charter of demands.

They blocked the Kashimpur regional road and later moved to the Dhaka-Tangail highway near the Konabari flyover, causing severe traffic disruptions.

In response to the unrest, the factories were initially declared closed indefinitely on December 29. However, following negotiations between the factory owners and workers, mediated by law enforcement officials, the factories reopened on January 1.

Despite the resumption of operations, the notice issued on December 31 confirmed the permanent closure of the facilities.
