
Singer-songwriter, bassist and former frontman of the rock band Miles, Shafin Ahmed, died aged 63 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Virginia, United States on Thursday.
He suffered from heart and kidney failure, according to the Bangladesh Band Music Fans Community.
A post on Miles’s official Facebook page said that Shafin Ahmed died due to cardiac arrest while on a personal visit to the United States.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed condolence at the death of Shafin Ahmed.
Expressing condolence at the death of Shafin Ahmed, the frontman of the band ‘Nagar Baul’, Faruq Mahfuz Anam James, wrote on his official Facebook page, ‘Respect to band Miles’s star Shafin Ahmed. Feel deep condolences to his audiences. Let us all pray for his soul to rest in peace.’
Singer, lyricist, composer and the rock band Dalchhut’s frontman, Bappa Mazumder, said that Shafin Ahmed was an inspiration for his generation.
He was also an extraordinary bassist in the country. I received his care as a musician when we shared the stage in many concerts at both home and abroad, said Bappa Mazumder. Â
One of the pillars of the ‘90s rock music in the country, Shafin Ahmed encouraged younger musicians and bands of the country, said singer and songwriter Joy Shahriar.
Recalling his childhood memories, singer, composer and bassist Farshid Alam said that Shafin Ahmed was his hero during that period.
‘He pursued band music facing a lot of criticism. He took care of the aspiring musicians,’ he shared.
Born on February 14, 1961 to the pioneering music artistes Kamal Dasgupta and Feroza Begum, Shafin Ahmed joined the Bangladeshi rock band Miles in 1979.
Continuing with Miles as the vocalist, songwriter, composer and bass guitarist from 1979 Shafin Ahmed left the band in 2021.
Shafin Ahmed is also acclaimed for many popular tracks, including ‘Pahari Meye’, ‘Phiriye Dao’, ‘Aj Janmadin Tomar’, ‘Dhiki Dhiki’, ‘Neela’, ‘Chad Tara Surjo’, ‘Ki Jaadu’, ‘Jani Tumi’ and ‘Se Kon Dorodiya Amar’.
He also released several solo albums, including ‘Tomake’, ‘Pagla Ghanti’, ‘Chhobi Ar Smritigulo’, ‘Kotodin Dekhina Tomay’, ‘Harano Sukh’ and paying tributes to his mother a Nazrul songs album titled ‘Mone Pore Aj’.
