The ruling Awami League said on Wednesday that organisational action will be taken against lawmakers and ministers whose relatives were contesting the ongoing upazila parishad elections defying party instructions
Speaking at a press conference at the party president’s political office at Dhanmondi, the party general secretary, Obaidul Quader, issued the warning, saying that the party has instructed that ministers, lawmakers and their children and relatives could not participate in the upazila elections.
Although the deadline for withdrawing candidacies, as set by the Election Commission, had passed, there was still room for withdrawal as candidates could rescind their nominations right up until the day before the election, Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said.
‘We have provisions for disciplinary action in our party… We made some decisions before the national parliamentary elections,’ he said.
Quader also said that action was taken against those who disobeyed the party decision in the 12th parliamentary elections as well.
‘The party will judge their actions. If they do not withdraw till the final stage, the party will take action against them in time,’ he said.
Asked about holding programme on the same day as announced by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the AL leader said that when the BNP goes for a one-sided rally, the issue of violent activities comes up.
‘The Awami League also called a rally at the same time. But there was no conflict for this,’ he said.
