The authorities of Dhaka Medical College, Chittagong Medical College, and Noakhali Science and Technology University banned politics on their campuses through separate orders on Saturday.

With these, so far three public universities and two government medical colleges prohibited politics on campus mainly following students’ demand after the resignation of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina as prime minister on August 5 through a mass uprising led by students.

A release, issued on Saturday and signed by Dhaka Medical College principal professor Md Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury, read that five decisions were taken at an urgent academic council meeting held on Saturday.

The decisions are—all types of student politics (Bangladesh Chhatra League, Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal, Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, others and any newly formed student organisations) will be permanently banned on the college campus, Shaheed Dr Fazle Rabbi Hall and Dr Alim Chowdhury Ladies Student Hall, with immediate punitive action to follow if anyone was found to conduct any form of political activities on the campus and the halls openly or secretly.

Other decisions include proper medical treatment of the students injured during the protests led by the Student Movement Against Discrimination, compassion towards the families of the martyrs during the protests, and withdrawal of a decision made on June 12 this year banishing some students from the campus, classes and student halls.

The Chittagong Medical College authorities on the day issued an office order, signed by college principal professor Sahena Akhtar that read under a decision reached on August 10, 2024 at an urgent academic council meeting, all the students, teachers, officers and employees were prohibited from involving in any political organisations or other kinds of organisations, and violators would face action under the institution’s rules and regulations.

The office order also referred to a unanimous decision at an academic council meeting in March 2021 banning all types of meetings, rallies, processions and slogans on the campus and areas concerned to ensure a proper and disciplined environment on the college campus.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Noakhali reported that Noakhali Science and Technology University through a decision taken by its regent board on Friday prohibited all its students and teachers from involving in politics on campus following an ultimatum from the Student Movement Against Discrimination.

The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, on August 8 banned on-campus politics following students’ demand.

Earlier in April this year, the High Court allowed the activities of all political organisations on the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology campus, responding to a writ petition filed by a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader, the student wing of then ruling Awami League.

The university authorities banned political activities on the campus on October 11, 2019 following ordinary students’ protests in the wake of the killing of its student Abrar Fahad by some Chhatra League leaders at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 7, 2019.

University general students, however, demanded the permanent expulsion of some students, including some Chhatra League leaders for resuming organisational activities on the campus on March 29 this year through a showdown defying the earlier ban.
