The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday said that at least 198 leaders and activists of the party were killed in the recent student-people movement that ensured the fall of Awami League rule under Sheikh Hasina.

’Many leaders and activists of BNP have laid down their lives in different movements. About 800 leaders and activists, including members of parliament, have gone missing. About two thousand activists have been killed in different movements. Moreover, 198 members of the party lost their lives in the movements,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office.


At the press conference, he announced a five-day programme to celebrate its 46th founding anniversary.

He said that the party would hold discussions at all district headquarters on August 31.

On the morning of September 1, party flags will be hoisted at party offices across the country including the central office, Fateha khwani and floral wreaths will be offered at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman at 11:00am and cultural programmes will be organised by Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha at Central Shaheed Minar in the evening, he said.

Processions will be held across the country on September 2, releasing fish will be held on September 3 and tree plantation programme across the country on September 4.

Apart from this, different front bodies of the party will hold discussion meeting on the occasion of the day.

The BNP secretary general said that the venue and schedule of the programmes will be announced later.

On the occasion of the founding anniversary, organisations will publish posters and special supplements.

On September 1, 1978, Ziaur Rahman formed the BNP.
