The High Court on Thursday lifted its earlier ban on publishing statements of Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman in the media.
A bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after pro-Awami League lawyer Nashreen Siddiqua Lina prayed for not to continue with her writ petition she filed in 2015 seeking a ban on publishing Tarique’s statements in all media.
The bench also rejected its January 7, 2015, ruling that wanted to know from secretaries of ministries of the home, and the information and broadcasting why publication of any statement of Tarique in the media would not be declared illegal. Â
The ruling said that Tarique ‘remains fugitive in the eye of law’ after he was convicted in his absence in several cases.
Pro-BNP lawyer Kayser Kamal defended Tarique while Nashreen Siddiqua moved her petition in person.Â
The HC bench did not allow Kayser Kamal to defend Tarique during the High Court’s last hearing in August 2023, stating that ‘he is a fugitive convict’ in at least five cases.Â
Tarique along with his family has been living in London since he was forced into exile in September 2008 by the then military-backed caretaker government.
