The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday urged people to hand over those persons to the police who were attempting to extort money in the name of the BNP.

‘The BNP has no connection with extortionists. Please hand over those people to the police who are trying to extort money using BNP’s name,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while distributing relief among flood victims in the Choto Sharifpur area of Cumilla’s Lalmai upazila.

He said that various newspapers were publishing news about allegations of extortion and that tarnished BNP’s image.

He said that the party had no connection with these activities.

‘There are attempts to undermine the victory achieved through the student-led mass uprising. Today, there is an effort to create divisions between us. Everyone should remain vigilant,’ he added.

‘We have had discussions with the interim government to ensure that they could create an environment for a fair election. The new government should be given time to address this,’ he added.

Addressing the party leaders and activists, Fakhrul said, ‘We fought for long 15-16 years. We have been implicated in false and fabricated cases and also victims of attacks. That situation has ended.’

‘If a fair election is held and if we get victory through people’s votes in the election, our problem will be solved,’ he added.
