At least 30 people were injured as a clash broke out between two groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Sreepur of Magura over dominance in the area.

The confrontation also led to widespread damage and looting at around 20 homes. The situation was later brought under control by the police.

The incident occurred at about 8:30am on Friday at Kodla village of Amalsar union in the upazila.

According to Sreepur police and locals, the conflict has been brewing for a long time. Since the fall of the Awami League government, two groups, led by BNP leaders, have been vying for social dominance in the village.

The clash started when Yakub Ali Biswas’s supporter Mohammad Kamrul Islam, went to deliver food to the Imam of Kodla Westpara Mosque. He was confronted by Turaf Ali’s supporter, Rabiul Islam, leading to a verbal argument. When Kamrul Islam was attacked, he fled, informing his supporters. Both groups then engaged in a violent confrontation using local weapons.

Rezaul Idris Ali Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Sreepur police station, said that 20 injured individuals were receiving treatment at local hospitals.

‘Additional police forces are deployed, and the situation is now under control. Two cases have been filed,’ he added.
