A leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal was killed and five others were injured as two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party clashed over establishing supremacy at Nangalkot upazila in Cumilla on Saturday.

The deceased is Md聽 Selim Bhuiyan, president of the Hensakhal union Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal, the voluntary wing of the BNP, and a resident of Heshakhal village.


Nangalkot police officer-in-charge AK Fazlul Haque confirmed that the body was kept at a hospital mortuary, stating that the situation is now calm.

The OC also said that legal action would be taken if any formal complaints were filed with the police station.

Witnesses said that the clash erupted when supporters of BNP central executive committee member and Nangalkot upazila BNP president Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan gathered at Badsha Mia School and College ground at Bangadda Bazar for a rally.

At around 3:10am, supporters of former BNP lawmaker Abdul Gofur Bhuiyan attempted to pass by the rally venue when they were allegedly attacked by the Mobashar Alam group.

During the clash, several individuals were injured and were taken to the local upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty declared Selim Bhuiyan dead.

His body was later sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital mortuary for autopsy, the police said.

He had a lunch at a house of his activist in Basonda village earlier in the day, Abdul Gofur Bhuiyan said, adding that while returning home, his supporters were attacked by Mobasher鈥檚 followers at Bangadda Bazar.

聽He also said that the activists of the rival group severely beat his five to six supporters, and Selim Bhuiyan, who was critically injured, died after being admitted to the hospital.

Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan, the leader of the other faction, could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.聽
