Adviser Mohammad Nahid Islam, a key coordinator of the students who led the July-August mass uprising, on Tuesday resigned from the interim government’s advisory council.

Nahid, who held the portfolios to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, submitted his resignation letter to chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

He resigned as an adviser to the interim government apparently to join the new political party to be launched by the Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagarik Committee at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka on February 28.

‘From today, I am not under any responsibilities of the government,’ Nahid, also a postgraduate student of Dhaka University’s sociology department, said at a press briefing outside the chief adviser’s residence, State Guest House Jamuna, after submitting his resignation letter.

‘I intend to join a new political party and I have resigned to work on the ground with the people to unite them again and implement the promises of the mass uprising,’ he said.

According to sources in the JNC, Nahid is likely to hold the post of convener in the new political party.

Nahid joined the interim government as one of the advisers on August 8, 2024, three days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024 amid the mass uprising spearheaded by the Students Against Discrimination.

Two other key student coordinators in the uprising, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and Mahfuj Alam, are still working as advisers in the Yunus-led interim government.

In the press briefing outside the chief adviser’s residence, Nahid said that he, in an informal meeting of the advisory council at about 1:00pm, had discussed a personal issue and, upon the discussion, he had submitted his resignation letter to the chief adviser.

In his resignation letter, he said that he, in the present perspective, was feeling to remain in the crowd of the students and the people for the greater interest of the country and the nation.

Nahid told reporters that he had resigned from all responsibilities from two ministries, the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, and other government committees.

He said that his belief was that the government had reached to a point of stability now.

He said that his role would be more important on the streets than in the government to meet the expectation for a democratic change and integrate the force of the students who participated in the mass uprising.

He said that he had tried to work in the past six months from his position and the people would evaluate the results.

He hoped that the interim government in the future would fulfill the expectations of the mass uprising and show success in checking the current law and order situation and price hike of essential commodities.

The press briefing was attended, among others, by the chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam.
