The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association on Saturday claimed that almost all the garment factories had paid wages for May and festival allowances to their workers before Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religion festival for the Muslims to be celebrated tomorrow.
However, labour leaders alleged that some of the factories made partial payments of wages and encountered issues regarding the announcement of Eid holidays in a few units.
According to the BGMEA, a total of 2,160 factories registered with the trade body are currently operational, with 1,835 located in Dhaka and 325 in Chattogram.
The trade body in a statement said that all factories had paid festival allowances and wages for May, except for four where the payment of festival allowances was still in process.
Nazma Akter, president of the Sammilito Garments Sramik Federation, said that some factories did not make full payment of wages for May, resulting in workers receiving only partial payments.
She also claimed that a few factories experienced issues with the announcement of Eid holidays.
The Industrial Police in a separate statement claimed that almost all factories registered with the BGMEA, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association and the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association have paid monthly wages and festival allowances.
The IP oversees more than 9,800 factories, including textile and readymade garment units, across eight industrial belts, including Ashulia, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Cumilla and Khulna, excluding the Dhaka Metropolitan area.
According to IP data, about 2,250 of these are textile and garment factories, while the rest are non-RMG units.
