A group of members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association have expressed their no-confidence in the existing board of directors of the trade body, alleging that the president of the trade body SM Mannan Kochi opened fire on students during the student movement against discrimination.
The BGMEA members, led by former vice-president Faisal Samad, handed over a memorandum to the current leaders of the association on Wednesday at the BGMEA headquarters at Uttara in the capital Dhaka.
Expressing no-confidence in the current board, they demanded an immediate dissolving of the board and handing over the responsibility to an interim board comprising honest, efficient and non-political members.
‘We are all aware that the current BGMEA president, SM Mannan Kochi, is the general secretary of the Dhaka City North Awami League. It is very sad that on August 4, Kochi opened fire on students at Mirpur-10,’ the BGMEA members said in their memorandum.
They also alleged that in Uttara and Mirpur areas in the city, miscreants led by Kochi played a key role in suppressing and killing members of the ongoing anti-discrimination student movement.
‘As the current president and board played a completely opposite role in this historic student movement and mass-uprising, they have lost the moral right to continue fulfilling their board responsibilities,’ the memo said.
The memorandum alleged that in the BGMEA election 2024, Kochi and his panel seized power through a farcical process using armed cadre forces.
It also mentioned that the then Awami League member of parliament Salam Murshedy, former MP Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, AL industry and commerce affairs secretary Siddiqur Rahman and Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam participated directly in vote rigging with their respective cohorts.
The members of the trade body raised allegations against the previous and the current board of various financial scams, irregularities, arbitrariness, abuse of power and corruption.
They claimed that the previous and current boards tarnished the image of the BGMEA through using the trade body for party and personal interests.
BGMEA director Shahidullah Azim told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had received a memorandum from a group of members and the issue would be discussed in a board meeting.
