The mass inquiry committee on killing of garment workers in 2023 on Saturday demanded trials of killers of garment workers during the movement of wage increase and demanded adequate compensations for the affected families.
The mass inquiry committee was formed headed by professor Anu Muhammad and member secretary Zahirul Islam on March 22.
The committee unveiled the report at a programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity where Zahirul Islam said that at least four garment workers were killed in the wage increase movement including Imran Hossain, Rasel Hawlader, Anjuara Begum and Jalal Uddin while many others were wounded in police firing.
The committee placed nine-point demand, including holding trials of the killers and giving them exemplary punishment, withdrawal of all cases filed against the workers by police and garment factory owners immediately, giving adequate compensation to the affected families.
The convener of the committee Anu Muhammad said, ‘In our country, garment workers were low-paid so the government should introduce a rationing system from where working class people could buy essential commodities at cheaper prices.’
Members of the committee lawyer Jyotrimoy Barua, labour leader Harun-or-Rashid, lawyer Sadia Arman, lawyer Ainun Nahar Lipi, labour leader Mushrefa Mishu and others attended the programme.
