Some branches of the country鈥檚 commercial banks reopened on Wednesday as the government relaxed the ongoing curfew, allowing offices to keep open from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Bank officials said that the bank branches witnessed cash withdrawal pressures.


Banks were instructed to open 50 per cent of their branches on Wednesday and 75 per cent today.

The selected bank branches began transactions at 11:00am on Wednesday and continued operating till 3:00pm with limited services available throughout the day.

Banks had the discretion which branches they would open based on convenience.

Usually, banks conduct transactions from 10:00am to 4:00pm, with office hours running until 5:00pm.

Some bank branches in the Dhaka鈥檚 commercial area, Motijheel, experienced higher customer turnout on Wednesday.

Agrani Bank managing director and CEO Murshedul Kabir told 抖阴精品 that there were more cases of cash withdrawals than deposits as customers could not withdraw cash in the past few days.

He said that although his bank was able to open letters of credit, businesses were appeared to be reluctant to do so now.

A senior official of Sonali Bank said that the bank did not get connection with SWIFT (The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) and was not able to open LCs.

The government imposed the curfew across the country from midnight past Friday, as the unrests centring quota reform protests in the country were on the surge and more than one hundred people were killed and several thousand others got injured till July 19 in clashes across the country, starting from July 16.

The government also announced general holiday for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, keeping offices, including banks, shut.

The country had also faced an internet blackout since July 18 that halted digital and mobile financial services.

Broadband internet connection was partially restored in the Dhaka city at about 9:00pm on Tuesday.
