Bangladesh men’s and women’s teams returned to winning ways in the 45th Chess Olympiad, defeating Cyprus and Barbados by identical 3.5-0.5 points in the third round on Friday in Budapest, Hungary.

In the open section, FIDE master Tahsin Tajwar Zia played his first match of the tournament and beat Kefalas Loukas when Bangladesh men’s team registered three wins and one draw against Cyprus.


International master Fahad Rahman beat FIDE master Michaelides Konstantinos, grandmaster Enamul Hossain beat candidate master Savva Panikos and FIDE master Manon Reja Neer drew against Isaakidis Alexandros in other three games.

In the women’s category, 80-year-old international master Rani Hamid defeated Barbados’ Springer Leshay in her first match of the competition, while FIDE masters Noshin Anjum and Wadifa Ahmed defeated women candidate masters Wilson Hannah and Reifer-Belle Chanon, and WCM Nusrat Jahan Alo drew with Blackman Katrina.

After the end of third round, both Bangladesh men’s and women’s teams have earned four points each.

In the fourth round games on Saturday, Bangladesh men’s team was due to face France in the open section and Austria in the women’s section.
