Onion prices have become volatile again on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka with the prices of the essential commodity rising further.
The price of the local variety of onions was at Tk聽100-110 a kilogram, while that of the exported variety was Tk 110-120 a kilogram on Thursday.
Traders said that the prices of the local variety of onions increased because of a supply shortage, adding that the shortage of supply was due to heavy rains in the country for the past few days.
They also said that a decrease in the import of onions was another reason for the price hike of the spice.
The prices of onions have witnessed rise since Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, which was celebrated in Bangladesh on June 17.
Before Eid-ul-Azha, the price of the local variety of onions was Tk 80-85 a kilogram, while the imported variety was sold at Tk聽80-90 a kilogram.
