
The prices of rice increased further on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday as mill owners raised the rate of the staple food showing price hike of paddy as an excuse.
Meanwhile, the prices of vegetables and broiler chicken also increased slightly on the market over the week.
Traders said that the prices of rice had continued to rise over the past two weeks, attributing the increase to mill owners who raised the mill gate rates citing the hike in paddy prices as a justification.
They also said that the prices of vegetables and broiler chicken went up on city markets due to supply shortages caused by monsoon rains and flooding in many districts, which damaged farms and disrupted transportation.
The prices of rice increased by Tk 2 a kilogram over the week and the fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 78–84 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80–85 a kilogram on Friday.
Lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 67-72 a kilogram over the week.
The coarse varieties of rice sold for Tk 54–56 a kilogram on Friday.
The prices of vegetables increased by up to Tk 20 a kilogram on the city markets on Friday.
Aubergine sold for Tk 100-120 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 40-45 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, gourd for Tk 60-70 apiece, okra for Tk 60 a kilogram and pointed gourd for Tk 50-60 a kilogram on the day.
The prices of green chillies increased by Tk 20-30 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 260-280 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
Potatoes sold for Tk 55-60 a kilogram on the day.
The prices of broiler chicken decreased by Tk 10 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 170 a kilogram on Friday.
Locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–650 a kilogram on the day.
Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 340–360 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The price of eggs decreased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and the items sold for Tk 50-52 a hali in the city over the week ending Friday.
The prices of onion also remained high over the week and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 110 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 105-110 a kilogram on the day.
The prices of fish remained unchanged on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
Rohita sold for Tk 300-400 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 300–380 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.
Pangas sold for Tk 200–220 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 220–240 a kilogram on Friday.
The prices of garlic decreased by Tk 20 a kilogram and its local variety sold for 200-220 a kilogram while imported item sold for Tk 190-220 a kilogram on Friday.
The price of beef remained high and the item sold for Tk 730-780 a kilogram.
Mutton sold for Tk 1,000-1,100 a kilogram on the city markets in Friday.
