National University on Thursday suspended the appointment of its pro-vice-chancellor within hours of appointing him in the position.
Professor Mohammed Mizanur Rahman was appointed as the university’s new pro-VC on Thursday afternoon.
The Ministry of Education, however, postponed the appointment in the evening.
The suspension order said that it was issued in ‘public interest’ without providing any more details.
The appointment and suspension orders were signed by Satarupa Talukder, a senior assistant secretary at the Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education.
Many speculations arose soon after the suspension order was issued, particularly because of earlier controversies in which Mizan was embroiled.
Professor Mizanur was once the director of the National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research in Savar from where he resigned in November 2021.
Mizan faced sexual harassment allegations by teachers and officials at the NITER. He was also accused of financial and administrative irregularities and abuse of power.
The governing body at NITER investigated the allegations which were found not proven.
‘I came to know on Thursday morning that I was appointed through a phone call.
Then I came to know that my appointment was canceled. I don’t know why it was cancelled. The authorities concerned will be able to say about this,’ said professor Mohammed Mizanur Rahman.
Mizan said that he had been a member of the science and technology sub-committee of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League since 2016 and denied the allegation that he was once involved in politics of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
