
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday directed to deal the juvenile lawbreakers from different perspectives instead of traditional way of combating criminals and prevent crimes of teenage gangs.
She made the directives while approving the draft of ‘National Logistics Policy 2024’during the weekly cabinet meeting at her office.
The prime minister also directed to increase the number of centres, engaged in rectifying and rehabilitation of juveniles, said cabinet secretary Md Mahbub Hossain at a press briefing in the secretariat.
‘Don’t keep them [teenage gangs] with criminals,’ he said quoting Sheikh Hasina.
Different approaches had been asked to be applied so that juvenile offenders would not be remained as a criminal for a long period, said the cabinet secretary.
Efforts should be there to utilise scopes for bringing back them to the normal life, he added.
Sheikh Hasina also directed ensuring counselling of the juvenile offenders by psychiatrists, guardians, teachers and local representatives.
Prime minister asked the social welfare ministry to increase the number of the correction centres. There were three such correction centres in the country then, he said.
The directives came against the backdrop that the Rapid Action Battalion arrested 39 members of teenage gangs at different areas in the capital in February.
RAB told reporters that teenage gangs were involved with snatching, extortion and other criminal activities.
The cabinet secretary said that ‘National Logistics Policy 2024’ was aimed at facilitating better services for transportation of goods by coordinated efforts on road, water and airways.
About 19 per cent cost on export could be reduced by implementing the policy successfully, he said.
He said that the guideline would also be applicable for imported and local ones.
Informing that there were 106 types of professionals involved in the overall good transportation process, he said that 54 of them had training facility.
For other 52 professionals, steps had been suggested in the guideline for training facilities.
The policy also stipulated the role of public, private and public-private-partnership for facilitating services on road, water and airways.
