The Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust on Monday expressed concern that the case of Rana Plaza collapse in Savar had not been resolved even after 11 years.

BLAST held a meeting at its office in the capital’s Kakrail, to discuss about the status of the cases, which were ongoing in various courts in the incident.

Speakers at the meeting said that the survivors and family members of deceased workers of Rana Plaza factories were still crying for compensation, treatment, and rehabilitation even after 11 years after the incident.

BLAST’s legal director, M Barkot Ali highlighted various aspects of the Rana Plaza collapse.

‘A total of 19 cases were filed in the High Court in connection with the Rana Plaza collapse. But it is a matter of regret that these cases are not settled even in 11 years,’ he said.

Barkot Ali also shared that all the accused in the case, except one, were on bail.

‘Among these, arrest warrants are currently issued for the accused in the criminal cases, filed by the directorate of inspection of factories and establishments in the labour court,’ he added.

Speakers also gave several recommendations for quick settlement of the cases.

They said that the reason of the delay for the cases had to be identified and the persons, responsible for the delay, should be brought under accountability.

They also said that these cases should be considered as more sensitive cases and effective initiatives should be taken for speedy trial in a special system.

They also demanded that regular reports on the progress of the case should be published.

The eight-storey building at Savar, in the outskirts Dhaka, which housed five garment factories, collapsed on April 24, 2013, killing at least 1,138 people, mostly apparel workers, and injuring over 2,000.
