The tailback on the Dhaka–Tangail–Bangabandhu Bridge Highway intensified as large number of holidaymakers kept going to the northern districts on Tuesday.

At about 4:00pm, a 27-kilometre tailback was seen from the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge to Karotia area via Rabna bypass, causing immense sufferings to the Eid holidaymakers and transport workers.

In the morning, a 20-kilometre tailback was created from the bridge to Rabna bypass.

As the day went by, the number of vehicles filled with passengers increased on the highway.

Vehicles were seen stuck in traffic gridlock for 20–30 minutes and then went slowly.

Heat and dust from the construction works amidst the traffic congestion caused huge sufferings of the people.

Many people were seen travelling on trucks and other goods vehicles defying laws and risking their lives.

According to the police and drivers, the pressure of vehicles on the highway was created as 24 vehicles went out of order on the highway due to minor accidents and mechanical glitches.

Elenga Highway Police Outpost in-charge Sajedur Rahman said on early Tuesday that the traffic congestion was caused due to the increased pressure of vehicles and mechanical glitches of a few vehicles at various points on the highway.

He said that police were working to ease the traffic congestion and hoped that the traffic movement would become normal with the progress of the day.

Enamul Kabir, driver of a Bogura-bound microbus at the Bikramhati CNG station under Tangail Sadar, said that he had started from the airport area in Dhaka at about 1:00am and he had to face traffic jam repeatedly on his way.

He said that he needed eight hours to reach Tangail due to the traffic tailback.

Local residents confirmed that vehicles were seen to remain standstill on the roads for hours early in the morning.
