
A youth was shot dead and five others were injured in a clash between two groups of the ruling Awami League over establishing supremacy in Charkewar Union under Sadar upazila in Munshiganj early Saturday.
The deceased is Parvez Kha, 20, son of Palash Kha. He died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to excessive bleeding from gunshot wounds, said police officials.
Police and locals said that at least five other people were also injured during the clash at Mollah Kandi village between Ahmed group, follower of AL lawmaker Mohammad Faisal Biplab, and Mamun group, follower of former AL lawmaker Mrinal Kanti Das.
The victim, Parvez Khan is a follower of lawmaker Mohammad Faisal.
The injured people were admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital, while one of the bullets injured, named Mohammad Rabbi, 19, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Firearms, cartridges, and bullet proof vests were recovered during a raid by police at about 1:00pm on Saturday in the village, after the death of the youth in the clash.
Sadar Circle additional superintendent of police, Thander Khairul Hasan, confirmed the recovery of firearms, cartridges, and bullet-proof jackets.
He said that the police recovered one pipe gun, seven rounds of cartridges, one bulletproof jacket, and seven hockey sticks that were found abandoned in the land of the village.
Locals said that there was a dispute for a long time between the local Ahmed group and the Mamun group in the area over establishing supremacy in the area. Both groups are involved in AL politics.
The clash erupted when the Ahmed group attacked the houses of the people of the Mamun group early Saturday, which left six people injured, including two with bullet wounds.
Aminul Islam, officer in charge of Munshiganj Sadar police station, said that Parvez Khan died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, among the two bullet injured victims.
He said that some houses of both groups were vandalized during the clash.
The OC also said that members of the Ahmed group were followers of lawmaker Mohammad Faisal Biplab, while members of the Mamun group were followers of former lawmaker Mrinal Kanti Das.
