
An Awami League leader, who shot and injured a farmer and a van-puller over a trivial matter at village Phulbaria of Mirpur upazila in Kushtia, was sent to jail after he was produced before a district court on Monday.
A case was also lodged against him with Mirpur police station in this connection.
The accused, Atahar Ali, is the joint-general secretary of Mirpur upazila unit Awami League and the former chairman of the Phulbaria union parishad.
A team of police conducted a drive at the residence of Atahar Ali and arrested him with his licensed pistol and two cartridges from his possession on Sunday night, said Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Mostofa Habibullah.
Later, they produced him before the Kushtia district court and the court sent him to jail for his involvement in shooting the farmer and the van-puller, the police official said.
On Saturday, an altercation took place between Atahar Ali and a farmer, Hashem Gazi, 52, over a trivial matter in the Phulbaria village at night. Atahar, at one stage, shot Hashem with his pistol leaving Hashem and van-puller Rezaul Karim, 45, critically injured on the spot.
Hearing their screams, local people rescued the injured and took them to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment where the attending doctors shifted them to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for better treatment as their conditions deteriorated.
Hashem鈥檚 niece, Sentu Gazi, on Saturday filed a case with Mirpur police station against 15 named, including Atahar Ali, and 20 to 25 unnamed persons in this connection.
