The Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Wednesday granted bail to Mamunul Haque, former joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, in three cases.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Mahbubul Haque, passed the order after hearing his bail petitions in the cases.

According to the cases, two out of the three cases were filed with the Paltan police station in the capital in connection with a clash between the leaders and activists of Hefazat and law enforcers during a programme, protesting the visit of the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in 2021.

Another case was filed with the Motijheel police station, following Hefazat people clashed with the police at a rally held at the Shapla Chatwar in Dhaka, demanding 13-point demands in May 2013.

Mamunul’s lawyer, Syed Joynul Abedin Mesbah, said that his client would not get released from jail right now as he did not get bail yet in two other cases — one case is under trial in a Dhaka court and another in a Chattogram court.

‘He would get released from the jail if he gets bail in rest of the two cases,’ Mesbah said.

On April 3, 2021, local residents held Mamunul Haque and Jannat Ara Jharna at the Royal Resort under the Sonargaon police station in Narayanganj.

But Mamunul claimed Jharna as his second wife when the police arrived after receiving information.

On April 18, 2021, Mamunul was arrested by the Detective Branch of Police from a madrassah in the capital’s Mohammadpur in connection with a violence case.

On April 30, 2021, a case was filed against Mamunul with the Sonargaon police station on charges of rape by his alleged second wife, Jannat Ara Jharna.

He was later arrested in various cases.
