The protesting teachers of Comilla University pressing for a 7-point demand on Thursday locked the offices of the vice-chancellor, treasurer and proctor declared them persona non grata on the campus.

The teachers, under the banner of Comilla University Teachers’ Association, vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.

All classes, examinations and admission processes would be outside the purview of their movement, they added.

The demands include— suspending university official Zakir Hossain for attacking teachers at the vice chancellor’s office on February 19 and probe the incident; removing proctor Kazi Omar Siddiqi for participating in the attack; opening guest house in Dhaka for the university’s teaching staff and officers; giving promotion to the teachers; withdrawing the illegally appointed staff; solving the matter of illegal promotions.

Comilla University Teachers’ Association president professor Md Abu Taher said that they had been waging movement since February but no demands were met.

‘Lastly we called an association meeting on April 23 and gave the university authorities ultimatum to meet our demands within 24 hours,’ he said.

As the demands were not met they declared vice-chancellor professor AFM Abdul Moyeen, treasurer professor Md Ashaduzzaman and proctor Kazi Omar Siddiqi unwanted on the campus, he said.

Professor Taher also said that they locked their on Thursday morning, which were under lock and key at night also.

‘From Sunday we will take in-person classes, examinations and participate in the admission processes,’ he said.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Cumilla reported that an emergency syndicate meeting was held on Wednesday night at the university.

The meeting took three decisions—the university will inform the education ministry of the situation, form a probe committee and consider the teachers’ demands.
