The Dhaka North City Corporation on Saturday deployed two spray cannons to sprinkle water on the main roads to reduce dust pollution and temperature during the ongoing heatwave.
The DNCC has also deployed 10 bowsers for spraying water in alleys and three mobile vans, each containing 500 liters of water, to offer free drinking water to pedestrians in each of its 54 wards.
After inspecting the initiative in the capital’s Agargaon area on Saturday, DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam told the media that two cannons will spray four lakh litres of water on the main city roads every day between 10:00am and 4:00pm six days a week, excluding Friday.
He also said that spray cannons that sprinkle water to create an effect like an artificial rain will be deployed in all the DNCC parks by next week. Â
These initiatives are taken based on the suggestions from Bushra Afreen, chief heat officer of the US-based research organisation Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center, in short Arsht-Rock, which collaborates with the DNCC, Mayor Atiq added.
He also mentioned that the DNCC would plant 1.20 lakh trees this year.
The mayor urged city dwellers to nurture the 80 thousands trees the north city authorities have planted last year and maintain cleanliness at homes, offices, educational institutions and surroundings to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.
