Election commissioner Anisur Rahman on Saturday said that the Election Commission was committed to doing everything necessary to hold the forthcoming sixth upazila parishad elections in a free, fair and impartial manner.
The election commissioner made the remark while talking to journalists after attending a view exchange meeting as chief guest in Sylhet in the afternoon.
The view-exchanging programme with the law enforcing agencies and administrative officials was organised in the conference room of District Shilpakala Academy in the city in a bid to make the first phase of upazila parishad elections successful.
Anisur also said in the programme that it was a democratic right of political parties to boycott the elections but the mass people of the country would not boycott the local elections.
He claimed that the Election Commission was committed to doing whatever necessary for holding a free, fair and impartial election.
‘We are working every moment to make the elections festive and participatory,’ he said, adding that there was a concern regarding the voter turnout if the on-going heatwave in the country continued on the polling day.
Sylhet divisional commissioner Abu Ahmed Siddiqui chaired the programme that was addressed by Sylhet metropolitan police commissioner Md Zakir Hossain Khan, additional DIG (admin & finance) of police Syed Haroon-Or Rashid, Border Guard Bangladesh Sreemangal sector commander AHM Yasin Chowdhury, Ansar and VDP deputy director Mohammad Abdul Awal, Sylhet district deputy commissioner Sheikh Russell Hasan, district police superintendent Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun and Sylhet regional election officer Abdul Halim Khan, among others.
The first phase of the sixth upazila parishad elections is scheduled to be held on May 8 in 11 upazilas of Sylhet division, according to the Election Commission.
