The Jatiya Sangsad standing committee on estimates on Sunday expressed anger over Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha’s delay in completing works of Purbachal New Town and Jhilmil residential projects.
The JS watchdog body came up with the disappointment at a meeting of the committee held in the Parliament Bhaban building, said a Parliament Secretariat press release.
It said that the matter was discussed at the meeting of the committee and it decided to inspect the two projects on site in July.
Confirming the matter, the committee chairman, AB Tajul Islam, told reporters that the committee gave advice to the ministry that both the projects should be habitable soon.
‘It is not enough to make roads only. There is a need for WASA facilities, electricity, and educational institutions. Because people will live there,’ he said.
The Purbachal New Town project started in 1995.
The duration of the project has so far been extended seven times since the commencement of its work.
The project was last extended by one and a half years from June 2022 to December 2024.
The Jhilmil residential area project along the Dhaka-Mawa highway in Keraniganj started in 1997.
According to the press release, the committee recommended the public works ministry to take measures to construct flats on abandoned land in Dhaka and Chittagong cities.
The meeting recommended that herringbone binding should be done in winter instead of in the monsoon in order to complete the project within the stipulated time and make the rural dirt roads sustainable.
Presided by AB Tajul, committee members Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Pran Gopal Datta, Aparajita Haque, Shahriar Alam and Khadizatul Anwar also participated in the meeting.
