Labour leaders, academics and professionals on Monday at a roundtable in Dhaka called on the Awami League government to introduce a rationing system for garment workers of the country from where they could buy essential commodities at cheaper prices.

Bangladesh Garment O Sweater Sramik Trade Union Kendra organised the round-table at the National Press Club demanding introduction of a rationing system for garment workers.


The organisation president, Iddris Ali, chaired the discussion meeting.

Dhaka University professor and economist MM Akash demanded that the government should keep an allocation in the forthcoming budget for introduction of a rationing system for the garment workers from where they could buy essential commodities at cheaper prices.

General secretary of the organisation, KM Ruhul Amin, in his keynote speech at the programme, said that garment workers were low-paid and so they could not run their families with their wages.

So, an immediate introduction of a stationing system for them could save them, Ruhul Amin added.

Acting president of the BGMEA, Nazrul Islam, said that government could take steps for introduction of a rationing system for the garment workers of the country.

Economist and fellow of CPD Mostafizur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Fauzia Moslem, labour leaders Abul Kalam Azad, Abul Hossain and others spoke at the roundtable.
