Bangladesh University Grants Commission chairman (additional charge) Professor Muhammad Alamgir stressed giving importance to the history of social transformation in formulating and implementing proper plans in the higher education sector of the country.

Besides, he suggested opening new departments and changing the curriculum if necessary in the university to face the challenges of digitisation, said a press release.


He said this while addressing a round table on ‘Social Transformation and Cooperation in Higher Education’ organised at UGC on Thursday.

Germany’s Bauhaus University pro-vice-chancellor Ulrike Kuch, resource management chair Professor Eckhard Kraft, UGC members Professor Md Sazzad Hossain, Professor Bishwajit Chanda, Professor Hasina Khan, UGC secretary Ferdous Zaman and the officers of the commission along with the directors of different departments took part.

Professor Alamgir said, ‘Bangladesh is now passing the era of demographic advantages. The working population of the country is very large. Converting the large working population into skilled human resources is a major challenge for the country.’ He mentioned that it was important to take and implement proper planning.

Pro-vice-chancellor of Bauhaus University Ulrike Kuch identified society’s history, politics, ecology, economics and ensuring the use of modern technology as one of the challenges of higher education. He believes that these are important elements of social transformation and to meet the challenges of social change it is necessary to plan properly on these issues.

Bauhaus University chair of resource management Professor Eckhard Kraft said, ‘Bauhaus University in Bangladesh is working jointly with Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Chittagong University of Science and Technology and Mongla Port on waste management. In his speech, he presented a picture of the development of Bangladesh universities and German universities in the past 15 years.

In the meeting, Bauhaus University was invited to cooperate with the universities of Bangladesh in the development of nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and biomaterials.
