Students of Dhaka University organised a rally on Sunday expressing solidarity with students who are protesting on campuses across the US against Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
They demanded an immediate end to the genocide in Palestine, punishment of those involved in the genocide and world peace at the solidarity rally, which began at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at DU after 3:00pm.
They also called for an end to the torture of university protesters across the US and the release of the students who have been arrested.
Students chanted various slogans and staged cultural performances in support of Palestine at the rally.
Music department students Ahmed Abdullah Salman and others sang songs. Besides, Abid Hasan Rafi, Hasibur Rahman and Shahinur Rahman recited poems.
Law department professor Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah said, ‘I have come here today to support the event organised by the students. The ongoing genocide in Palestine has broken all previous records. Never before have so many women and children been killed in any wars after World War I and II.’
Ariful Islam, a professor at the management information systems department, demanded the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Miftahul Jannat, a student of the management department, said that 34,600 innocent people had been killed in Palestine so far.
‘We strongly condemn the barbaric attacks on the innocent people in Palestine,’ said Jannat.
Later, the students brought out a protest rally from the Shahbagh intersection and burnt Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s effigy at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
