
A 71-year-old national ethnic minority person was arrested for his alleged connection with ethnic armed group Kuki-Chin National Front and bank looting incident in Ruma upazila of Bandarban in early April, the officials said on Monday.
The man, Khowai Bawm, was arrested from Basatlangpara of the upazila on Sunday afternoon and sent to jail by Bandarban Chief Judicial Magistrate Nurul Haque.
Sub-inspector Bishwajit Singh, a general recording officer at Bandarban Court, said that Khowai Bawm was sent to jail in the case filed in connection with the Sonali Bank robbery.
On April 2, the KNF launched an attack to loot money from the vault of Sonali Bank鈥檚 Ruma upazila branch and abducted branch manager Nezam Uddin. They failed to loot money but looted at least 14 firearms and over 400 bullets, injuring members of law enforcement agencies.
Nezam was rescued on April 4 through a negotiation by the Rapid Action Battalion.
Later on, on April 3, the KNF also looted Tk 17 lakh in cash from the Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban.
Around 80 people were arrested in connection with nine cases filled following the incidents.
The army-led joint force reportedly clashed with the KNF members in different places leaving at least five people killed in a month.
