The International Organisation for Migration, United Nations agency for migration, in a report revealed on Tuesday mentioned that Bangladesh remains as the 6th top migrant sending country, among others, but 8th in remittance earning.

The IOM unveiled the World Migration Report 2024 at a hotel in the capital.

The report estimates the number of migrants across the world at nearly 281 million international migrants in the world, which equates to 3.6 per cent of the global population. But increasing numbers of people are being displaced, within and out of their country of origin, because of conflict, violence, political or economic instability as well as climate change and other disasters.

In 2022, there were 117 million displaced people in the world, and 71.2 million internally displaced people. The number of asylum-seekers has risen from 4.1 million in 2020 to 5.4 million in 2022, an increase of more than 30 per cent.

According to the report, Bangladesh secured eighth position in the list of remittance earning countries with some $21.50 billion in 2022.

Earlier in 2020, Bangladesh had the same position with $21.75 billion remittance, according to the World Migration Report 2022.

According to the report, India is the top migrant sending country of the world followed by Mexico, Russia, China and Syria.

India earned 111.22 billion in 2022, Mexico 61.10, China 51.00, Philippines 38.05, France 30.04, Pakistan 29.87 and Egypt 28.33 billion.

The United States of America was identified as the top migrant receiving country from where 79.15 billion was remitted in 2022.

Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit executive director CR Abrar said that Bangladesh earns less compared with the number of workers it has sent.

‘Bangladesh is still sending low-paid workers who not only earn low but also face difficulties in destination countries,’ he said asking the government to emphasise the importance of workers’ skill development.

Foreign minister Hasan Mahmud and IOM director general Amy Pope, chief of IOM Mission in Bangladesh Abdusattor Esoev, former foreign secretary Shahidul Haque, other senior government officials and diplomats were present at the event, among others.
