Local government, rural development and cooperatives minister Tazul Islam on Tuesday told the national parliament that Gabtoli bus terminal would be transformed into a multimodal station with all kinds of civic facilities.

The minister disclosed the information in reply to a notice raised by the ruling Awami League lawmaker Mainul Hossain Khan from Dhaka-14 constituency in the first session of the house.

The minister submitted his written reply in the parliament on Monday.

In the notice, Mainul said that modernisation of Gabtoli bus terminal was very important.

‘At present there is no systematic parking system and passengers, coming from far away, are suffering due to long traffic. If Gabtoli terminal is modernised, all these irregularities and mismanagement can be prevented,’ read the notice.

The minister in his reply said that Gabtoli Underground Metrorail station would be constructed on the northern route of Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line-5), under Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited.

For this, 12.80 acres of land on the south side of the terminal has been initially selected and the terminal will be temporarily shifted from its current location.

‘The new temporary terminal is 6400 square metres. Along with, the depot will be constructed to keep 260 cars,’ said Tazul Islam.

The minister said that the terminal would be transformed into a multimodal station with all kinds of civic facilities.

In future, Gabtoli bus terminal would be upgraded to City Bus Terminal and modern inter-district bus terminal would be constructed at Hemayetpur, he informed the parliament.
